Often spiral wound drum link chain hoists, whether fixed or mobile, are controlled remotely and used to regulate the desirable pond level. The link chain allows for “dogging” of the gate to the deck at different elevations and then disengagement of the hoist so that it is available to raise and lower the remaining gates.

When two chains are required to lift the gate, two drums are required and varying load conditions on each chain can occur. Dual wound drum link chain hoists should be designed to equalize the load on the chains and to prevent jamming and twisting of the gate.
